The final of South West Junior Chef of the Year 2022 took place on Saturday 1st October at Exeter College, when the first of our 2022 winners was crowned.
Well done to all six of the young cooks (aged 13-15) who had cooked their way to the title of Junior Chef of the Year in their own counties in June and who met at the grand final on Saturday. And what a final it was! The quality of cooking and range of skills on display was truly impressive and our judges thoroughly enjoyed seeing such competence among such young cooks before selecting their winner.
Many congratulations to Syd who, aged just 14, initially won Devon Junior Chef in June to qualify for the final, where he won the overall title, South West Junior Chef of the Year with his amazing main course dish which he named “Lasagne this is not….”. This was a clever dish of West Country fillet of beef, goat’s cheese and mushroom ravioli served with a rich roasted tomato and balsamic sauce and King Oyster mushroom.
Details of all competitors and their dishes can be found below.
Each of our finalists was mentored by one of our judges over the summer who invited them into their kitchens to develop and enhance their dishes in preparation for the final, providing valuable experience of a working kitchen for these budding chefs.
Thank you very much to our judges for the county finals and special thanks to those who mentored the competitors (details below).
Many thanks, also, to the teachers and parents of the young finalists who have clearly inspired them to develop their interest and skills in the kitchen and have provided so much support for them throughout the competition.
The Junior Chef final followed the final of South West Home Cook of the Year which took place during the morning of 1st October. The winner of this award will be announced at our forthcoming awards presentation evening. See below for more details.
